I’m always horrified that people think it’s funny to make jokes about her. I’m horrified that anyone thinks a disability* is a punchline. I always wonder what their parents would think of their child if they said such things at the dinner table. And then, you know, I remember that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree and that this probably passes for decent dinner table conversation!

TL; DR: It is neither funny nor appropriate to make jokes about someone else’s disabilities.**

* I call it a disability because that is how the law classifies it. Of course, you might not consider it as such. I don’t really see it as an impediment.

** Because there is a difference between a couple of deaf people making jokes about their deafness (a la this meme) and “lol deaf people sound like distressed walruses.”

Ok….now, I’m shocked. The whole world tells that he wants some Equality for Everyone. Better said…

What security risk? If deaf people see everyone running screaming in the opposite direction because there’s a fire, guess what? We’re going to run screaming in the opposite direction, too! If there’s a hijack attempt, your hearing is not going to make the hijacker go away. If the plane is crashing, your deafness is not going to make the plane fall even faster. THERE IS NO SECURITY RISK. WE ARE NOT HELPLESS.

Thank you all SO much for following this blog. It means a lot to me. I hope that this is the start of a beautiful friendship. <3

That being said, I think I’d better introduce myself.

My name’s Marcie, I’m 19 years old, and I’m hard-of-hearing due to a combination of birth defects (unspecified nerve damage) and otosclerosis. The otosclerosis will, eventually, render me completely deaf. Currently, I rely on hearing aids and a microphone system to hear. I’m learning sign language—I’m not very good at it yet, I’m afraid—and I’ve picked up a bit of lip reading along the way. I created this meme because I was sick and tired of that damn Philolsoprator (“If you’re born deaf, what language do you think in”) being the only meme about deaf people.
